This series, titled, "Colorado Wildlife: Icons of the Rockies", features a mule deer, a mountain lion, and a big horn sheep. "I painted the backgrounds of all three pieces at the same time. Then I waited for a month while they dried, before I rubbed them down with a coarse cloth, to create an out-of-focus, almost portrait-styled background. Then come the details: the reflection of a cloudy, Colorado sky with the outlines of pine trees in the sheep's eyeball, the hints of cobalt blue to deepen shadows in the folds of their skin, the tiny hairs, especially the ones that capture just a bit of the sunbeams.
